India vs Australia 1st T20I

During his innings, there was one instance where the ball hit the edge of his bat and directly onto his helmet. Obviously, this kind of situations could be dangerous as ICC has strict protocol nowadays regarding concussion. After Phil Hughes incident in 2014, there has been a great dispute about the quality of helmets and all those kinds of stuff.

┬áThe ICC protocol says: “Generally, concussion symptoms will settle within two-three days and a player diagnosed with a concussion is ready to return in about a week but, in some individuals, this time might be shorter or longer. Medical oversight, as occurs in elite teams, is essential if a player is to return to play within a week or on a subsequent day of a multi-day match.”

Jadeja was hit on the helmet on the final over of the 1st innings. The medical staff was not present in the ground at the moment to have a check but there is well-possibility that delayed concussion may have happened to him. There was no other way for match officials to allow Chahal to replace Jadeja as concussion substitute due to the consequences.

India vs Australia 1st T20I: Controversy

Justin Langer, Australian Coach was definitely not happy with the decision as we can see his disapproval of the decision while talking to David Boon.

According to the ICC protocol, there should be alike replacement in case of concussion substitute. Jadeja, playing as an all-rounder batted exceptionally well. He also gives 4 complete overs to India in bowling. In case of concussion substitute, playing Chahal in place of Jadeja was almost no-brainer.

In the process, Chahal played as substitute bowler and fielder. He also became the first player to be appointed man of the match who came as a concussion substitute.

Kohli later remarked that, the concussion substitute may have worked well for him.
